Refuge
Refuge by way of theeespacepope on Reddit. Located at Inhabitants Refuge is a small, rustic town paying homage to the Old West, or at least the type of Old West you spot in movies. It is positioned within the Woven Gulch and used to be encased fully in a supposedly impregnable bubble made up (most likely) of pure time. You know, like in the motion pictures. The buildings are "rustic elegant," made largely of wood with some steel panels right here and there. It is a little bit bit "shambley," however no longer in disrepair. More like other people worked very laborious and did numerous intricate work to make it as livable as possible with few assets at their disposal. It's charmingly (adorably?) cobbled in combination. The paint scheme is brown.
Refuge has a inhabitants of about a hundred people.[1] This comprises:
Roswell, the Sheriff's Deputy Cassidy, a miner and accused legal. Is now the town's Elder and Mayor Sheriff Isaak, the (now former) mayor, (now former) Elder, and normal shadowy figure Ren, the owner of The Davey Lamp Paloma, the Town Witch Brogden, a middle elderly dwarf lady and financial institution teller Ash, the elven gambler The Goliath (Name Unknown) The Liberation Brigade (a.k.a. Purple Kerchiefs: approx. 5 members, at least one magical elf and one human woman) Two financial institution guards (Jerry and Greg) Unnamed dark-haired man, presumably the proprietor of Helpington's Luca, Chief Cleric of the Temple Istus and brother of Redmond Redmond, chief of The Liberation Brigade and brother of Luca (Note the goddess Istus, who has a temple in Refuge but does not are living there.)Natural Resources[edit | edit supply]Originally, Refuge's major industry used to be mining for diamonds. What used to be once a quiet (nicely, loud, due to the mining) the town become "not the most efficient" because the diamond seam dried up. Following the Day of Story and Song, a rich, new vein of diamonds was once found out.
Economy[edit | edit supply]Refuge operates on a strictly diamond-based economy. Ten diamonds is the standard amount for a high-value bet or price of a desirable excellent (like a large prophecy from Paloma). One diamond is the standard amount for a small just right (corresponding to a small prophecy from Paloma). Prior to the bubble going up, 1 diamond used to be worth about 300 gold items.
Refuge was in large part untouched via the Hunger's assault and with the discovery of a brand new vein of diamonds, the city changed into a filthy rich mining the town as soon as once more.
Holidays[edit | edit source]Refuge celebrates Hug Day.[2]
Civic Institutions[edit | edit source]Refuge has a couple of law-beings: Roswell, the deputy, and Sheriff Isaak. They've been able to keep the peace actually nicely up till the Tres Horny Boys display up on the town.
An important governmental function is served by way of the town Elder. Originally, before The Visitor brought Jack and June, the Elder ran the mines. After the mines dried up, The Visitor introduced Jack, who changed into the city Elder. After Jack's sacrifice was once made, Sheriff Isaak turned into the town Elder.
Sheriff Isaak was once also Town Mayor, however it's unclear if it is a new place for Isaak, a place he held while Jack was once Town Elder, or if there has always been a twin position of Mayor/Elder.
Cassidy is elected mayor some time after the city is rescued from the Purple Worm but before the time bubble is introduced down.
Here's a map:
Here's a hyperlink to view it larger.
Gate:[edit | edit supply]At the doorway of the city stands a large gate. The inscription "By Their Sacrifice, Our Home is Made Safe" is burned into the picket atop the gate. When no longer in a different way occupied, it appears Roswell stands guard beneath the gate. They are underneath the gate at 11:00am.
Well:[edit | edit source]There is a large water effectively right within the gate.
Main Street[edit | edit supply] Helpingtons[edit | edit supply]General store with no longer a lot of issues on the market. It's a closed device!
Ep. 42: Roswell helps blank up in Helpingtons. The Davy Lamp[edit | edit source]Across the street from Helpingtons is a saloon with saloon doors. The identify of the established order is ornately carved into an indication putting above the door. The saloon has a piano, where an entertainer plays (a minimum of all over the 11am hour). There's a shuffleboard table, however one of the most legs is shorter than the others so it's no longer amusing to play in any respect.
Ren is the bartender and owner of The Davy Lamp, and she or he works onerous to create a amusing, flirty setting.
The saloon additionally has rooms for rent.
Ep. 42: The Davy Lamp is the primary web site of infractions with red kerchiefed ruffians. Magnus sees a person in a red handkerchief is mendacity in the street. Another man in pink goes flying into the road out the saloon doors. Roswell moves to chase the 2 men, but they run away. Roswell tells the boys that it was only a bar battle, not anything more. Ep. 43: There's a scuffle with the ruffians at 11:10 (similar as ultimate time). As they're operating away, Magnus shoots one in the calf. Bank[edit | edit source]The financial institution is the nicest development in town and more solidly built than the opposite structures, featuring bars over the windows, and a vault that is secure by a nigh impenetrable vault door manufactured from a black iron door Nine toes in diameter and five feet deep. There's an enormous aggregate lock dial at the door, flanked on three sides with small metal hatches.
There's a tumbler dome on the ceiling that isn't a light fixture. Perhaps a skylight? (It's a safety device that shoots darts, whoops!)
Inside, the bank is the nicest building in Refuge. It's very well kept. There are potted plants and a long picket counter with a glass partition that protects Brogden, the bank teller. The bank has two armed guards.
Ep. 42. At 11:45 the bank explodes. Most occupants of the bank die, excluding one dwarf lady who's alive but injured. Three red kerchief ruffians continue to exist the blast to combat Roswell. The vault used to be charred however still closed — if their plan used to be robbery it did not work. Ep. 43 Once again, the bank explodes. Magnus collects diamonds from the non-vault areas of the financial institution. Ep. Forty six THB join with Redmond and the Liberation Brigade to rob the financial institutionThe Clock Tower[edit | edit supply]There is a Clock Tower, which marks time in Refuge. We'll get to that bit later.
Ep. 42: The hearth within the financial institution spreads to the clock tower, which strikes twelve and then cracks in half of. Ep. 43: Ibid.Jail/Sheriff's workplace[edit | edit source]To the suitable of the clock tower is the sheriff's place of job with attached prison. The the city is sufficiently small that it most effective wishes a small prison with a couple of cells. The jail is made from clay and stone. The cells are unoccupied, save for the only on the end. In that one sits Cassidy, a large, burly half-orc girl.
The Sheriff's office comprises a pair smaller chairs Roswell has damaged, and Sheriff Isaak's big table with a big, giant, sturdy chair at the back of it. The table has a locked, alarmed drawer, containing a suite of keys.
Ep. 42: The adventure boys are temporarily detained in the jail. Taako breaks into the desk drawer, surroundings off the alarm. Cassidy may be in a prison cell. When the prison is broken within the explosion, Cassidy waltzes proper out and Taako casts Knock to simply go away.Witch's Cottage[edit | edit supply]Located in the forest, the Witch's Cottage is domestic to Paloma, who's indeed a witch.
The cottage smells straight up wonderful: just like the Heiner's factory on the West End of Huntington (which smells like superb candy bread such that you simply drift along at the scent traces like a cool animated film cat smelling a pie). It's not, then again, manufactured from gingerbread.
Inside, striking from the ceiling is a galaxy of crystal teardrops. Each teardrop holds a prophecy. The room is comfortable and cramped, filled as it is with the tear drop prophesies and also cakes, pies, and cupcakes in glass-covered serving dishes. There's a table (at the back of which Paloma is sitting once we first meet her), and a big, round oven.
Ep. 43: The adventure boys go to visit Paloma. Ep. 45: Taako visits Paloma.Manor / Elder's Mansion[edit | edit source]At the tip of the road is a huge, two story manor -- one of the most handiest two story structures on the town. Cassidy tells the boys that Sheriff Isaak, who is also Mayor and Town Elder, lives there.
The Manor is surrounded by way of barbed wire and a locked gate. The Manor has a large heavy door that's the only entrance into the construction, and it is closely padlocked with several locks. There are some home windows on the second one floor.
Ep. 42: In the noon earthquake, the clock tower cracks in 1/2 and falls on the Manor house. Ep. 43: Ibid. Presumably in Ep. 44 as properly. Ep. 45: Merle and Magnus pass to research. Nobody has been within for a very long time, and there are a couple of padlocks at the door.Statue[edit | edit supply]Directly in front of the manor is an 8-foot tall statue cast from some roughly brown metal. The statue depicts three figures: a small human lady, about seven years old, dressed in a knee-length dress along with her hair finished up in a bob. She is keeping arms with a large, vast, bearded human guy wearing a miner's helmet with a torch on it, and a big flannel shirt and big cumbersome pants. He's obviously dressed as a miner. They are both smiling, and the statue seems to be beautiful well-made: they are able to make out the facial options of this statue. Standing behind them, with a hand on every of their shoulders, is a determine cloaked in a purple robe. He is smaller than the person, however has lovely broad shoulders as nicely: he's tall and muscular, which may also be seen even under the figure's robe. The figure's robe is obscuring their face.
Roswell signifies[3] that the statue depicts a vital tournament in the town's history: "the time that the visitor came and brought the daddy and daughter to our the city. And by means of their sacrifice our the city was made secure!"
Ren tells Taako[4] that the themes of the statue had been the ultimate Elder, named Jack, and the girl June. They died in the quarry, and, "via their sacrifice our the town was made protected!"
Other geographical options:[edit | edit source] Forest:[edit | edit supply]Behind the manor lies a thick wooded area of pine bushes. Paloma's cottage is within the woodland.
Plateau[edit | edit supply]To the west of town, there's a plateau overlooking the road and spiraling off of the buildings.
There is a cave atop the plateau, sort of in a 2d plateau on the first plateau. In this cave lives Luca.
Fallen Temple[edit | edit supply]Located at the plateau is the fallen temple of Istus, goddess of fate and future.
It looks as if an outdated California Mission-style church with terra cotta partitions that comprised a unmarried huge sanctuary area with massive double doorways that overpassed the city. When the temple is fallen, the door body is the one characteristic left standing. The temple featured a steeple that had a clock face, which, when the temple has fallen, is collapsed into the sanctuary and is laying on the floor. The numbers on the clock face have most commonly worn off, however the clock's hands are stunning, intricate, and sharp.
It has very spectacular joists.
After town is stored from its time loop downside, Redmond and Luca get to work on totally restoring the temple to its former glory.
Stone Fruit Farm[edit | edit source]Located on the plateau and right at the border of the bubble is Stone Fruit Farm. The farm has two large plots of orchards, lined with tall, well-kept trees, and each and every of the bushes has dozens of plump stone culmination.[5] Stone culmination are as not unusual as apples on this global, and the trees thrive in harsh environments like the Woven Gulch. These glance specifically delicious: marbled crimson rinds, completely plump, and the size of regulation bocce balls.
The farm has an excessively inviting-looking domicile. It's comfy inside, with a banner of Istus, a nice stew going, and an place of work with plots for the orchard laid out.
It used to be vivisected through the bubble: both the fields and a small portion of the home were bring to a halt via the bubble partitions. The fields were once vast, however the bubble lower them down to a fraction of their former size.
The farm also serves because the home-base of the Purple Kerchief'd Ruffians.
Tall wood fence[edit | edit source]It runs alongside the jap perimeter of the town.
Bubble[edit | edit supply]Formerly encircling all the the city with a fluctuating energy of natural time (more than likely). Time is undoubtedly odd inside the bubble: the general public imagine it was publish between a year and a year and a 1/2 prior to the events of The Eleventh Hour happen[6], however actual evidence issues to it having been lively for a minimum of five years.[7]
Nobody has been outside the bubble since it popped up, to the best of Ren's wisdom.[8]
The Bubble keeps the city protected from the risks out of doors, but it can be confining. Before the bubble, things weren't so great, in step with Ren[9], but after the bubble manifested, other people appear to be nicer to each other.
The Bubble in reality bisects some issues on the town (and beneath the town), including Stone Fruit Farm and a nest of Purple Worms.[10]
The Bubble is kind of midway between opaque and translucent. If you pay attention, you'll see thru it, however it is a little shimmery.
The Bubble used to be in the end popped by way of Magnus' Chance Lance, which held the ability of Istus, and time in Refuge has now stuck up with the rest of the world.
The Quarry[edit | edit supply]The street out of the city dead-ends into a gate that accesses the quarry. It has a big steel padlock on it.
Once in the course of the gate, there's a ramp made up of many switchbacks that weaves from side to side, main down about 80 vertical ft into the quarry. The entrance to the quarry is sealed with rocks and should be opened with power or a conveyable hole.
Once inside the quarry, there's first a spoil room, and then an elevator down into the mines themselves. Key options of the mines come with an elevator, a mine cart monitor, lovable however hungry fuzz insects, and a cavern wherein is a Purple Worm. The Purple Worm is held in position by a bubble-like forcefield, which is breached at noon on a daily basis.
Ep. 43 Merle follows Cassidy down into the quarry, and Paloma tells the men they should know what's within the quarry, even supposing they are not ready to face it but. Ep. Forty four takes position completely within the Quarry. For an hourlong dive in, listen!Certain things used to occur during the 11:00 hour in the town of Refuge that, with out intervention, repeated each and every loop. The most evident, of course, is the arrival of the Adventure Zone group at (probably) the highest of the hour.
